Double Lead Level 4

The aim is to provide passing options for attacking players.

Organisation: 10 players, 1 ball. Players set up in similar formation but with an additional pair in the shooting circle, all 3 pairs being marked by 1 defender. The drill ends with a shot at goal before returning to the ball to other end of the court in order to start again.

Coaching Points:

  • Effective use of sprint and change direction technique to maximise success
  • Timing and accuracy of passes in relation to movement
  • Defender must make a clear move left or right to mark one of the attacking players
  • Release the ball quickly, incorporating a turn in the air to aid vision of the next pass

Progressions:

  • Static feeders/receivers can move to get the ball
  • Defenders increase intensity of pressure on each attacker
  • Attackers to use a variety of attacking moves to outwit the defender
  • Vary the starting positions so they are game related e.g. goal line throw-in, rebound, side line throw-in etc.

Double Lead Level 3

The aim is to provide passing options for attacking players.

Organisation: 8 players, 1 ball, whole court area.

  • Double Lead Level 4

Double Lead Level 2

The aim is to provide passing options for attacking players.

Organisation: 5 players, 1 ball. Two players stand side by side in the middle of the two other players who stand 1 at each end. A defender stands in front of the two middle players. These two players split and drive out at opposite angles, the unmarked player receives the ball from the feeder. The other player changes direction (to head back close to the area from where she started) to receive the next pass. This player then throws the ball to the person at the other end of the area. This allows the practice to begin again, this time from the opposite end.

Coaching Points:

  • Effective use of sprint and change direction technique to maximise success
  • Timing and accuracy of passes in relation to movement
  • Defender must make a clear move left or right to mark one of the attacking players

Progressions:

  • Static feeders/receivers can move to get the ball
  • Defender increases intensity of  pressure on each attacker
  • Attackers to use a variety of attacking moves to outwit the defender
  • Double Lead Level 3

Double Lead

The aim is to provide passing options for attacking players.

Organisation: 4 players, 1 ball. Two players stand side by side in the middle of the two other players who stand 1 at each end. The two players split and drive out at opposite angles, one of them receives the ball from the feeder.

Progressions:

  • Static feeders/receivers can move to get the ball
  • Double Lead Level 2

3v3

The aim is to apply the attacking movement skills in a small sided game.

Organisation: Cone off an appropriately sized square for 6 players to work in. Divide into 3 attackers and 3 defenders. Give players 2 or 3 attacking moves to use, aiming to keep possession of the ball for a certain amount of time. Rotate attackers and defenders accordingly.

Coaching Points:

  • See information under each attacking move

Progressions:

  • Vary the amount of defenders according to success
  • Vary the size of the square according to success
  • Apply to game like situations e.g. a goal line throw-in

The Full Turn

The aim is to outwit a defender by using a full turn.

Netball Attacking Movement

Organisation: 3 players – 1 worker, 1 shadowing defender and 1 feeder. Cones can be used to signal a point to drive towards. Worker and defender stand next to each other. The worker makes a full turn around the back of her defender and then drives off.

Coaching Points

  • Start in a two-footed balanced position with knees flexed
  • Head up and eyes on the ball
  • Pivot backwards on the ball of the foot that is closest to the defender, taking your hips, shoulders and head with you
  • Pivot on the other leg in order to swing the original leg around to complete the full turn
  • Drive forward off the front foot pulling the knee through
  • Angle your sprint towards the ball
  • Regain eye contact with the feeder by turning the head early
  • Take the pass at speed, jumping to control the landing which should be in an upright, balanced position

Progressions:

  • Work both sides of the body
  • Increase pressure from defender
  • Apply technique to a 3v3 game or other small game situations with conditions “every ball must be passed to someone who has used a full turn

The Half Turn

The aim is to outwit a defender by using a half turn.

Netball Attacking Movement

Organisation: 3 players – 1 worker, 1 shadowing defender and 1 feeder. Cones can be used to signal a point to drive towards. Worker and defender stand next to each other. The worker makes a half-turn backwards, then pivots forward to the original position and drives off.

Coaching Points:

  • Start in a two-footed balanced position with knees flexed
  • Head up and eyes on the ball
  • Pivot backwards on the ball of the foot that is closest to the defender, taking your hips, shoulders and head with you
  • Quickly swing forwards again and sprint at an angle away from the defender
  • Regain eye contact with the feeder by turning the head early
  • Take the pass at speed, jumping to control the landing which should be in an upright, balanced position

Progressions:

  • Work both sides of the body
  • Increase pressure from defender
  • Apply technique to a 3v3 game or other small game situations with conditions “every ball must be passed to someone who has used a half turn”
  • Progress to a Full Turn

The Straight Sprint

The aim is to outrun a defender who is slower than you.

Organisation: 3 players – 1 worker, 1 shadowing defender and 1 feeder. Cones can be used to signal a point to drive towards. Worker sprints at an angle in order to receive the ball ahead of the defender.

Coaching Points:

  • Weight on balls of feet and knees flexed
  • Head up, eyes on the ball
  • Drive forward off the front foot pulling the knee through
  • Use the arms to maximise acceleration
  • Take the pass at speed, jumping to control the landing which should be in an upright, balanced position
  • Move the ball away from the defender

Progressions:

  • Vary angles and directions moved in
  • Increase pressure from defender
  • Apply technique to a 3v3 game or other small game situations with conditions “every ball must be passed to someone who has used a straight sprint

Change of Direction

The aim is to send a defender in the wrong direction.

Organisation: 3 players – 1 worker, 1 shadowing defender and 1 feeder. Cones can be used to signal a point to drive towards. Worker sprints in one direction and then suddenly drives off in another, leaving the defender committed to the direction of the first move.

Coaching Points:

  • Body weight over the feet, knees and ankles flexed
  • Head up, eyes on the ball and feeder
  • Sprint in chosen direction as if wanting to receive the ball
  • Suddenly plant the outside foot whilst bending the knee, turn head, shoulders and hips to face the new direction and drive off again
  • Take the pass at speed, jumping to control the landing which should be in an upright, balanced position

Progressions:

  • Vary angles and directions moved in
  • Increase pressure from defender
  • Apply technique to a 3v3 game or other small game situations with conditions “every ball must be passed to someone who has used a change of direction

The Front Cut

The aim is to enable an attacker to be in front of her defender when receiving the ball.

Organisation: 3 players – 1 worker, 1 shadowing defender and 1 feeder. Cones can be used to signal a point to drive towards. Worker and defender begin square to the feeder. The defender must stand on the inside of the worker. Worker drives forwards, stops suddenly and then sprints again cutting off the defender

Coaching Points:

  • Make a strong sprint forwards taking your defender with you
  • Suddenly stop and push hard off the outside foot cutting behind the defender
  • Drive forward again to receive the ball on the same line as the feeder
  • Take the pass at speed, jumping to control the landing which should be in an upright, balanced position
  • Feeder must throw an appropriate pass which is into the space for the worker to attack

Progressions:

  • Work both sides of the body
  • Increase pressure from defender
  • Apply technique to a 3v3 game or other small game situations with conditions “every ball must be passed to someone who has used a front cut

Double Dodge

The aim is to use a double dodge in order to outwit a defender.

Organisation: 3 players – 1 worker, 1 shadowing defender and 1 feeder. Cones can be used to signal a point to drive towards. Worker steps to both left and then right or vice versa and then in order to deceive the defender sprints in the opposite direction.

Coaching Points:

  • Body weight over the feet, knees and ankles flexed
  • Head up, eyes on the ball and feeder
  • Step out with left or right foot, whilst dropping the corresponding shoulder and then repeat on the other side of the body
  • Use this second foot to transfer your weight to enable a change of direction
  • Turn your hips and drive towards the cone
  • Take the pass at speed, jumping to control the landing which should be in an upright, balanced position
  • Feeder must throw an appropriate pass which is into the space for the worker to attack

Progressions:

  • Work both sides of the body
  • Increase pressure from defender
  • Apply technique to a 3v3 game or other small game situations with conditions “every ball must be passed to someone who has used a double dodge

The Dodge

Change of Pace

The aim is to use a change of speed in order to outwit a defender.

Organisation: 3 players – 1 worker, 1 shadowing defender and 1 feeder. The defender and worker start behind and to the side of the feeder. The feeder tosses the ball to themselves to start the drill. The worker runs forwards and then accelerates in to a sprint past the feeder and away from the defender in order to receive the ball unchallenged.

Coaching Points:

  • Use small steps and then suddenly drive forward or at an angle
  • Transfer weight forward on the balls of your feet in order to gain speed
  • Increase use of arms to assist with acceleration
  • Keep the body upright and back straight
  • Only bring your arms away from your body in order to receive the ball
  • Take the pass at speed, jumping to control the landing which should be in an upright, balanced position

Progressions:

  • Increase pressure from defender
  • Apply technique to a 3v3 game or other small game situations with conditions “every ball must be passed to someone who has used a change of pace
