Banding 1

The aim is to encourage all players to participate in bringing the ball down the court.

Organisation: 7 players working on the whole court, spaced in this area according to their position. GK starts with the ball passing it to GD followed by WD – C – WA – GA – GS. GA can then make a second drive in to the shooting area to receive the ball under the post for a shot at goal

Coaching Points:

  • Ensure passes are accurate and into the space, enabling the moving player to attack the ball
  • Keep head and eyes up, maintaining an awareness of the players and space around you
  • Make your drives clear by using your arms and moving into the space available, aiming to balance the court at all times

Progressions:

  • Vary the starting position of the GK e.g. goal line throw-in, rebound etc.
  • Incorporate a Change of Direction before receiving the ball

Changing Bands

The aim is to encourage all players to participate in bringing the ball down the court

Organisation: 7 players working on the whole court, spaced in this area according to their position. GK starts with the ball and passes it to one of two players who have made a move for the ball. The ball continues to move down the court with 2 options being created for the feeder each time. Players need to adjust their positioning and reoffer for the next pass in order to support the play down the court

  • Add limited defence to the drill, increasing their pressure on each repetition
  • Build the defence to a full court game
  • Incorporate different attacking moves and a variety of passes

Banding – Limited Defence

The aim is to encourage all players to participate in bringing the ball down the court.

Organisation: 7 players working on the whole court, spaced in this area according to their position, 3 defenders – one in each third. GK starts with the ball and passes it to a free attacking player. The ball moves down the court using the available players that are not being defended.

Coaching Points:

  • Ensure passes are accurate and into the space, enabling the moving player to attack the ball
  • Keep head and eyes up, maintaining an awareness of both the attackers and defenders and the space around you
  • Make your drives clear by using your arms and moving into the space available, aiming to balance the court at all times
  • You may need to adjust your positioning and offer again for the next pass

Progressions:

  • Vary the starting position of the GK e.g. goal line throw-in, rebound etc.
  • Increase pressure / amount of defenders
  • Vary the order in which players receive the ball

Banding – Change of Direction

The aim is to encourage all players to participate in bringing the ball down the court.

Organisation: 7 players working on the whole court, spaced in this area according to their position. GK starts with the ball and passes it to the GD after she has completed an attacking move e.g. a change of direction. Whilst the GD is receiving the ball and making herself ready to pass it on, the WD begins her change of direction and so on. GS’s should make their change of direction towards the post in order to be in the best shooting position.

Coaching Points:

  • Ensure passes are accurate and into the space, enabling the moving player to attack the ball
  • Time the change of direction so you are making your second drive as the feeder is ready to release the ball
  • Keep head and eyes up, maintaining an awareness of the players and space around you
  • Make your drives clear by using your arms and moving into the space available, aiming to balance the court at all times

Progressions:

  • Vary the starting position of the GK e.g. goal line throw-in, rebound etc.
  • Add limited defence to the drill
