A center must have good ball handling and contact skills. This position also needs a player with high game intelligence to create space for overlapping players. Centers must be able to ride and dodge tackles, and being quick is a definite advantage.

Peripheral vision can help a center make the correct decision of whether to pass or run, a good center will know what they intend to do with the ball before they have even received it.

At set pieces centers must be able to find gaps in the defense and know when to pressure the defense and when to stand off.

Centers must also be strong tacklers.
